What is a 2D Echo Test?

A two-dimensional Echocardiogram or 2D Echo test is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to assess the functioning of the heart. When these waves hit the organ structures inside, they echo back and produce moving images of the heart and valves on the computer screen.

The image thus formed is known as Echocardiogram. This is used to assess any malfunction or damage associated with the heart tissue or valves like clots, blockage, congenital heart defects, and issues like coronary artery diseases.

It is a non-invasive procedure with no side effects. However, one may feel slightly uncomfortable during transducer placement as it puts pressure on the heart.

      Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the 2D Echo Test used for?

2D Echo test is a non-invasive diagnostic test used for detecting various cardiac abnormalities like

      • A defect in heart muscle called cardiomyopathy
      • congenital heart disease like ventricular septal defect present at birth
      • blockage in the arteries leading to atherosclerosis
      • defects in either the left or right or both valves
      • cardiac tamponade or pressure in the pericardial lining
      • other septal wall defects

Understanding the test results of the 2D Echo test

During the 2D echo test, the real-time monitoring of the heart muscle happens that forms a moving image of the heart. These images provide an indication of strength or weakness, if any, of the heart muscle. A cone-shaped image can be seen on the computer screen, which provides an idea about any damage or defect.

Why do I need a 2D Echo Test?

You will be asked to undergo a 2D echo test if you are suffering from any heart-related ailment like septal defects, cardiomyopathy, infarction, or if you recently experienced shortness of breath accompanied by chest pain. The 2D echo test will diagnose any underlying condition that is compromising the functioning of the heart.

What happens during the 2D Echo Test?

The 2D Echo test takes about an hour. You will be asked to remove any metal jewellery. After that, small adhesive electrodes will be attached to your chest. The electrodes are connected to an ECG machine. A gel will be applied to your chest and then a transducer will be placed and moved around the chest area to get the image of the heart.

Can a 2D echo detect heart attack?

If the heart muscle is moving weakly during the 2D echo test, then it may be suggestive of the damaged heart tissue. However, the ECG is a better diagnostic test for detecting a heart attack as it measures the electrical impulses of the heart muscle that can provide a full picture of a heart attack.

Is fasting required for a 2D echo test?

No, you do not need to fast to undergo a standard 2D echo test. It is a completely non-invasive procedure that doesn't use blood or urine samples. You can drink water, eat food and take your medication before this test. However, in the case of the Transesophageal Echo Test, you will be asked to remain on an empty stomach for at least 6 hours.

Is 2D echo better than ECG?

Electrocardiogram or ECG is a very common diagnostic test used to measure the electric impulses generated by the heart. It is an initial test that is done to assess the functional activity of the heart muscle in people experiencing symptoms of heart-related issues. Both these tests monitor the heart’s functional activity and complement each other in diagnosing heart issues.

Can 2D echo detect blocked arteries?

A 2D echo test cannot detect blocked arteries. It can only detect the functioning of the heart muscle and if there is any weakness of heart tissue, one may suspect the presence of blocked arteries. A coronary angiogram is a standard test used to detect the blockage in the coronary arteries and diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

Is the 2D Echo test painful?

No, the standard 2D echo test is not painful. A slight amount of pressure is applied on your chest while moving the probe, which can feel slightly uncomfortable. However, during the transesophageal echo test, you may feel a little pain due to the placement of the tube inside the mouth. However, this will subside after some time.

What does a 2D echo test show?

The 2D Echo test produces images of different parts of the heart on a computer screen, which is later evaluated by a cardiologist to check for any damage or blockage of the heart tissues and valves. It also evaluates the efficiency of the heart muscles that pump blood to different organs.
