What is Antiphospholipid (APL) Test?

Antiphospholipid (APL test) is a medical test conducted to check the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in the blood. Our body has a well-developed immune system that produces antibodies (proteins) to fight against a host of infections and diseases. Sometimes, our immune system mistakenly attacks our phospholipids, resulting in blood clots and several other health complications if left untreated. Phospholipids are a class of lipids (fats) found in the blood vessels and blood cells that play a significant role in cell functioning and blood clotting.

      Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the APL Test used for?

Antiphospholipid (APL test) is used to detect the presence of phospholipid antibodies in the blood. The presence of phospholipid antibodies is indicative of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and multiple sclerosis. It is also used to check for recurring and unusual blood clots, repeated miscarriages, and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).

Understanding the test results of Anti Phospholipid (APL) test

An APL test with negative results means that you have no phospholipid antibodies. If your results show low to moderate levels, it indicates that you have phospholipid antibodies that may have developed due to age, exposure to infection, or certain medications.

Why do I need an APL test?

A doctor uses an APL test if a patient experiences frequent miscarriages and shows signs of unusual blood clots, or has a past or family history of autoimmune diseases or cancer. It is also used to diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome, a medical condition where the immune system attacks the phospholipids in your body, causing the formation of blood clots.

What happens during an APL test?

A healthcare provider takes a blood sample by inserting a small and thin needle through the vein in your arm. Once the blood sample is taken, your healthcare provider cleans the injection site and puts on a bandaid on it to prevent any infection.

Is the APL test is to be done fasting or without fasting?

No special preparation is required for the test. It can be done any time of the day and does not require you to fast. If you are taking any medications, please inform your doctor or healthcare provider.

What is the life expectancy of someone with antiphospholipid syndrome?

People who are diagnosed early with antiphospholipid syndrome, with the correct treatment can lead normal lives. People with antiphospholipid syndrome are given blood thinners to keep the blood from clotting too often. Along with that, your doctor may prescribe medications to manage and keep the disease under control.

      What is APL positive?

If the antiphospholipid (APL) test results are positive, it is indicative of the presence of phospholipid antibodies. To be sure, your doctor will ask you to take the test for the second time after a few weeks and compare the results. If both tests show positive results, it is indicative of the presence of antibodies and a high risk of developing blood clots. For further clarification, your doctor may ask you to do additional tests to confirm the diagnosis of the medical condition. Once that is done, your doctor will start the right treatment for you.

      What are APL antibodies?

Antiphospholipid antibodies are a group of antibodies that are created by our immune system, which mistakenly attack the phospholipids in our body. Phospholipids are lipoproteins that are essential in cell functioning and blood clotting. The APL antibodies interfere with the process of blood clotting, hence increasing the risk of developing blood clots in the arteries and veins. This could lead to the risk of developing strokes, heart attacks, or other serious health complications.

How long does it take to test for APL syndrome?

Your healthcare provider will take a blood sample for the test. It takes a maximum of 1 minute to take the blood and finish cleaning the injection site. You receive your reports within 24 to 48 hours after the test, which will clarify if you have APL syndrome.

What is the normal range of APLA tests?

The normal range for APL is between 0.0 to 10.0 MPL units/ml. If the test shows more than 10, it indicates the presence of phospholipid antibodies. For the test interpretation, consult your doctor or healthcare provider.
