Surgery for aortic valve stenosis is a procedure that involves the removal of the diseased aortic valve and its replacement with a prosthetic valve. TAVR and SAVR are two ways in which valve replacement can be performed.
Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is a highly effective treatment for severe aortic valve stenosis and is often recommended for patients who are not suitable candidates for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), such as those with complex valve anatomy.
As with any surgical procedure, this surgery carries risks as well, including those associated with anaesthesia, bleeding, infection, and complications specific to heart surgery. Recovery from the surgery typically requires a hospital stay of several days to a week, followed by a period of rehabilitation and a gradual return to normal activities.
