Knee replacement surgery also referred to as knee arthroplasty, can help relieve pain and restore function in severely diseased knee joints. The procedure entails removing damaged bone and cartilage from the thighbone, shinbone, and kneecap and replacing it with a prosthesis made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and polymers.
The most common reason for knee replacement surgery is to relieve severe osteoarthritic pain. Patients who require knee replacement surgery frequently have difficulty walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs.
Patients are frequently advised to discontinue certain medications and dietary supplements prior to surgery and to refrain from eating anything on the day of surgery. Patients may require crutches or a walker for several weeks following the procedure.
